This week, a story that particularly caught my attention was that of a heterosexual couple being denied a Civil Partnership. The news has often been littered with stories discussing how homosexual couples have been denied the right to marry and it is somewhat unheard of for a story to focus around someone from a social majority to be denied equality.

I initially found the story on Twitter where there was a range of mixed reactions, from the "I hope your 15 minutes of fame is worth the money & time #CivilPartnership Just get married FFS Courts should have better things to do!" (@Im Stoddicus) to "It's easy to mock this case, but I think they have a really legitimate point. Equality is for everyone." (@piratesprogress). Since then, I have found a number of articles online also covering the story:

Heterosexual Couple Rebecca Steinfeld And Charles Keidan Denied Civil Partnership

This article, written by Huffington Post, discusses the online petitions and activists fighting against the couple's denial, with LGBT Human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell describing it as a "huge disappointment". I think that it's important that there is commentary from members of the LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender) community and LGBT Human Rights campaigners as it is displays a sense of community, regardless of people's sexuality. However, it also presents the concept that everyday people - "us" - are in opposition against the Government and authority - "them".

I think this story is a clear representation of the issue of equality and how, although it is improving for different minority groups, there is still much left to be done in regards to both the minority and the majority groups.
