Weekly News (12/10/2015)

In April 2015, the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Company - an underground safe deposit facility in London - was burgled. Recently, the event has made the news once again as one of the burglars - Danny Jones - was given a days release from prison to lead the police to where he had buried a portion of the haul.
"The Week", a weekly British magazine which was founded by Jolyon Connell (formerly of centre-right "Sunday Telegraph") covered the story.  Regardless of being founded by someone once involded within a centre-right institution, the magazine is popularly regarded as a centre politics magazine, therefore providing a less bias representation than other magazines and newspapers that adopt a strong political preference.

Within their article, quotes from Danny Jones were provided, stating:

"If I don't get the chance to go out under armed escort, I hope some poor sod who's having it hard out there with his or her family find the lot and have a nice life, as you never know, Martin, people do find things, don't they?"

From the addition of this single quote, Danny Jones is represented in a variety of different ways. For example, alongside the contextual information of his criminal record,  Jones is presented as being a troublesome, self-centered prisoner who cares not to assist the police should he not be benefited. However, on the other hand, one could argue that his mention of "some poor sod who's having it hard out there with his or her family" shows his empathetic side; for the greater good.

It is my opinion that this story was not published to entertain nor to shock but instead to inform and update regarding an ongoing situation. Because of this, there is little - if any - speculation within the article and factual information is printed clearly. This distinguishes the magazine from a tabloid, which is a format that leads itself to sensationalism.

  3. I like the background information on the story as some may not have heard about the initial, so that is useful information. I also like the extra information given about the writer and where they previously worked to give a more in depth understanding about their political views and how that may effect their perspective.
To improve this perhaps include the birds-eye view photograph of the cemetery in which the goods were hidden so that, as a reader I can get a better understanding of the story.
    Well done
