The Croydon tram derailment on Wednesday (9th November 2016) morning was arguably overshadowed by the news that Donald Trump had won the election for the US presidency, with social media exploding to express their anger regarding the lack of coverage across national news channels.

The Croydon Advertiser reports "despite the deaths of seven peoples as a result of the tram derailment news channels have not be[en] leading on the story. Instead Trump's shock win over Hillary Clinton has dominated news broadcasts. And plenty of residents feel that the channels got their priorities wrong, with the unfolding events in Croydon deserving more air time than they were getting".

I think this highlights the issue of censorship in the sense that news broadcasters and distributors often censor out the stories they deem less important and instead roll with stories which they predict will have the biggest readership or spark the largest public discourse. I think this is a solid example of how mainstream media cannot be trusted to always offer the whole picture on relevant news when they are being more subjective about what they think people will want to read or consume, rather than telling the news how it is.

  1. I think you address a very good point and incorporated your opinion justifiably, could you add some more visual aids or even more details on the incident itself?

  2. I think this is a good story to use, as it is so local and therefore has had some impact on you or people you know, I also like how you have included your opinion to give the analysis more depth. Maybe some images may help for when you look back so that you can remember the extent opf the tragedy. But otherwise, well done.

  3. I think that the ladies are right pictures please! I am as you already know furious about the medias coverage of this. When there was a riot in Croydon they would not leave it alone, constantly bombarding the world with negative representations of the area, 7 people die and many are injured and its a second string story. Its also how strangely the hospitals that were vilified earlier the same week for poor A&E services done a fantastic job with the 50 or so injured but the press also never mentioned this. Could it be because the Newspaper owners have friends or stakes in the Health Service being privatised? TELL THE TRUTH! (rant over) well done Sophia.
