A story that caught my attention this week was one of Chloe Allen, the first female to serve on British army front line, for two reasons: the contemporary issues, especially regarding gender, that the story highlighted and the different ways that sources chose to report the story.
The BBC reports, in an objective fashion:
"A 24-year-old transgender soldier has become the first woman to serve on the front line with the British Army. Chloe Allen, from Cumbria, joined the Scots Guards as a man in 2012 but began hormone therapy in the last month, and has officially changed her name."Throughout the BBC article there is positive coverage of the issue, with it being highlighted as a step-forward for our society and of the British Army:
"The British Army is really proving itself as an inclusive organisation where everyone is welcome and can thrive."However, it is a considerably impersonal article that doesn't address the person the story revolves around as much as it focuses on the British Army and speak of politics - such as mention of David Cameron following a recommendation from the head of the Army that women should be able to serve.
It is interesting to note that The Guardian, a widely considered left-wing broadsheet, made more reference to Chloe Allen and her thoughts regarding the circumstances as well as still discussing the political context of the situation.
The Sun, however, adopted a different writing style which can be attributed to it's typically right-wing political and social policies and the tabloid format in which it is written. For example, the headline reads "Sex-change soldier is Britain's first woman to fight on front line...after being born a boy" which uses sensationalism to draw in the reader. Likewise, the language used is less sophisticated which is also fitting to it's tabloid format. The Sun also focused more intensely on the life of Chloe Allen than it did the army.

Your article clearly outlines the comparison between both newspapers and you highlighted your reasons for choosing this article and the relevance it has on current or contemporary issues. It was interesting to understand your understanding of the story and how each newspaper presented the story. Well Done :))
ReplyDeleteThis is a very detailed weekly news post. You show a clear reason behind your choice of the story as well as the reason behind the way that the newspaper presented it. It is also really good how you have used more than one source in order to compare how the same story is told.
