Boys aged two and three die in house fire in Huddersfield

I decided to focus on this story of two boys dying in a house fire as I felt that it effectively represented the attitudes of the general public and audiences of newspapers and news distributors. The article was written and distributed by BBC News, a media institution that is widely regarded politically neutral and trusted across the British nation.

It is interesting the note the emphasis on age within the title and I think that this displays evidence of what the audience of BBC News are attracted by. Tragedy is made more severe and emotive when it affects young people, and that is evident within the use of the individual's ages in the title, given that it is unlikely for a story that tells of a fourty-five year old man and a thirty-two year old man dying in a fire to even make such a mainstream news channel, especially with a headline stating their age. This is because the preferred reading is that the audience will react to the story because of the age of the people dying, therefore making it "more of a tragedy" in the eyes of the public.

It is also interesting that there is little mention of any other details regarding the story, other than the boys ages, including no mention of other family members or the circumstances regarding their death. This suggests that there is often more substance within a headline, which allows people to speculate, than there is within the body of what many media institutions are willing to release.
