Representation of Regional and National Identity
Friday, February 26, 2016
National identity refers to the identity associated with a country whereas regional identity refers to the identity associated with an area within a country; a region.
In regards to nationality, nation identity is formed when people identify as belonging to different "nations". For example, a person belonging the the USA or a person belonging the UK, regardless of the similar cultures, have different nationalities. Likewise, a person in England also has a different nationality to that of a Welsh person, despite proximity in regards to location and similarities in culture.
As relationships are formed between different nations, so are stereotypes, and often the media uses these stereotypes to represent particular nations. For example, a stereotype that is often portrayed in the media is that of Scottish people showing hatred towards other nations and having violent tempers. Likewise, they are also stereotyped to have strong accents, ginger hair and to wear a considerable amount of tartan. A prime example of this stereotype being represented within the media is how Groundskeeper Willie is represented in the Simpsons, like in Series 15 Episode 12 where Willie describes the hatred that Scottish people have for other nations:
Another example of national identity stereotypes is one of Italian people being loud and chaotic, with musical accents and gestures, and eating traditional Italian food such as pastas and pizzas. This is shown in Series 1 Episode 4 of "Mind Your Language" when the Italian character is represented as loud, musical and referencing traditional Italian food.
In regards to regional identity, regions are often represented through the use of reality television shows such as The Only Way Is Essex, Geordie Shore and Made in Chelsea, all British television shows that focus on areas of England.
A regional stereotype that is generally created for the North of England is that the people are loud, rude, drink and party often and of a lower class and status than those from the South. For example, a program that supports these stereotypes and shows Northern people in a negative light - specifically those from Newcastle - is Geordie Shore. For example, in Series 11 Episode 1, the cast go to Greece and are shown using crude, loud language and profanities and constantly drinking.
