Weekly News (20/02/2017)
Monday, February 27, 2017On Friday, British artist Stormzy released his debut album Gang Signs and Prayers and in order to promote his album performed a number of different shows around London, alerting fans shortly before he was set to appear at a destination. He performed at Box Park Croydon at 7pm, tweeting his destination at 6pm, and the venue was filled by the time he was there. This shows the power of social media in regards to marketing.
Also in regards to industry, his management team didn't allow fans to bring in cameras and film or photograph the event. This relates to regulation; regulating what material is released beyond their control that could affect album sales or reputation.
Many local news distributors, such as The Croydon Advertiser, reported the story, creating a positive representation of region identity in regards to Croydon that is not common within the media. Some of the tweets from the public included in the report solidified this positive representation:
We get a bad rep but our little town is gr8 Seeing Stormzy all over twitter appearing back in the manor at boxpark last night #GSAP #Croydon

Stormzy has dominated the media on a number of occassions in recent weeks. For example, Stormzy recently dueted with Ed Sheeran - one of the most popular musicians in the world at the moment - on the BRIT Awards, at which he was nominated for the British Breakthrough Act. The rise of black artists, in particular grime artists - such as Stormzy and Skepta - follow last years #BritsSoWhite camapign which, similarly to #OscarsSoWhite, saw the Internet explode in retaliation to the fact that black artists are rarely nominated, let alone win, at award shows such as the BRIT Awards. This raises the issue of racism and, in particular, white supremacy.
