B3) How effectively were your three main texts marketed?
Friday, January 20, 2017Marketing is the way in which products and brands are advertised and sold to consumers and audiences. The three main texts which I will be exploring are The Great British Bake-Off - a game show format baking show that has been aired for seven series since 2010 on BBC One - GoggleBox - a fly-on the wall documentary style reality show, aired on Channel 4 since 2013 - and I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here - a reality game show that has been aired on ITV 1 since 2002. Of the three shows, they are all successfully marketed in a number of ways and arguably the best way for all three has been through utilising social media and therefore penetrating the public discourse.
Evidence of the marketing success can be found through a number of statistics, for example television ratings. The opening episode of the most recent series of The Great British Bake-Off, series seven (2016), for example, was watched by 11.2 million viewers which could arguably not have been achieved through good marketing techniques that entice audiences. The success of marketing can also be shown through the followings each show have on social media. The Great British Bake Off, at this time, have 558k followers on Twitter, with Gogglebox having 237k and I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here with 1.13m followers. This shows that they effectively market through social media, helping to create engagement and build a committed fan base. Social media is also effective in expanding audiences through social interaction, as detailed by the Uses and Gratifications theory, is a valid reason that many audiences choose to consume certain medias. If people can see their friends interacting with one of the programs on social media, it is likely to rouse their interest and therefore they will watch the programs in order to create discussion with their peers.
Merchandise is used effectively by The Great British Bake-Off to generate interest, providing branded products related to the series that could therefore appear in people's homes and generate conversation regarding the show.
I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here follows a similar format with their downloadable app which encourages users to vote and engage in interviews and exclusive features. This is likely to also cause involvement in social discourse and spread through word of mouth.

Good summary of the question at beginning which ensures you do not lead with your examples, and specific figures such as the viewer numbers. Further in the second paragraph you have given direct comparison between your 3 main texts which demonstrates research and deeper understanding of your text. Although brief, this is a soundly argued and evidence response to the question.
