It was announced this week that Snoop Dogg, the rapper notorious for his involvement with cannabis, would launch a website dedicated to the drug.

The new lifestyle platform, "Merry Jane", will provide visitors with information about marijuana and videos and interviews with other high-profile users of the drug.

Sky News recently reported the story, providing minimal information and lack of content other than the key facts and few quotes from Snoop Dogg. As the article would not be considered "newsworthy" by many more credible news sources, such as the BBC, or even by many consumers of the news, this shows that Sky News is leaning further towards becoming a tabloid. Further, this is presented in the sensationalism of the story itself. Regardless of the fact that the primary purpose of the website would be to educate, it is branded by Sky as simply as a "cannabis lifestyle site". This label disregards the sole purpose of the story, creative negative connotations and attitudes towards the website even prior to it's launch. This stance that is created by the terminology used by Sky News may be explained by Sky's right-wing, conservative ideologies.

Also in regards to the headline, the use of the word "site" is also informal, further detaching Sky News from the credible status of many broadsheet newspapers.

  1. Sky news published a story about Snoop Doggs new website about cannabis? Maybe not so appropriate for certain viewers... to be honest it is Sky, ran by Rupert Murdock. Not that out of the ordinary for him lol.
